The 30th Anniversary of the Penn Masters kicks off at one the Buffalo area's finest courses...Cloverbank Country Club offers a challenging yet enjoyable experience for golfers of all skill levels. Set amidst rolling hills and lush greenery, players can enjoy picturesque views, including sights of Lake Erie and the Buffalo skyline.
The course is renowned for its strategic design, incorporating varying elevations and well-placed hazards to test players' skills. A standout feature is the 11th hole—a 185-yard par 3 that requires a shot over a large man-made pond to a green surrounded by sand dunes, providing both a visual and technical challenge.
Hole 1 - Par 4 White: 392 yards A picturesque opening hole, Hole 1 at Cloverbank greets players with a hard-working Par 4. A well-placed drive in the fairway sets up a mid-to-short iron approach into a gently elevated, bunker protected green. Club selection is critical on your second shot, as the putting surface is slightly deeper than it appears from the fairway.
Pro Tip: Favor the right side off the tee to open up the best angle into the green. Avoid going long on your approach — a subtle back-to-front slope makes for a slippery putt from above the hole.
Hole 2 - Par 4 White: 376 yards A true test early in the round, Hole 2 plays slightly uphill and demands accuracy off the tee. A small creek 10 yards right of the fairway could cause big numbers if the tee shot leaks toward it. The landing area narrows, and the green is well-protected with subtle breaks that challenge even the steadiest putting stroke.
Pro Tip: Don’t let the yardage fool you, this hole plays longer than it looks. Take an extra club on the approach and aim for the middle of the green to keep trouble out of play.
Hole 3 - Par 3 White: 209 yards A long par 3 that demands a well-struck tee shot. The green is deep and receptive but flanked by bunkers on either side. Precision is more important than power here, especially when the pin is tucked in the corners.
Pro Tip: Play to the center of the green and trust your putter. Par is an excellent score here, especially with a back pin and swirling winds off the lake.
Hole 4 Par 4 White: 365 yards Hole 4 is a straightforward par 4 that rewards smart play. A fairway wood or long iron off the tee can keep you short of trouble, setting up a wedge into a fairly flat green. Wind exposure can influence both shots.
Pro Tip: Keep the ball in play off the tee, even if it means less distance. On approach, stay below the hole for your best birdie chance.
Hole 5 Par 5 White: 526 yards The longest and most difficult hole on the course, Hole 5 is a true three-shot par 5 for most players. A generous fairway allows you to swing freely, but precision is key on the layup and approach. Beware of OB long on the 2nd shot and special drop zones around the green.
Pro Tip: Play conservatively unless you're confident. The green slopes gently from back to front, ideal for a high-lofted third shot.
Hole 6 Par 3 White: 145 yards This par 3 features a narrow green protected by bunkers and subtle undulation. Misses short or right can still recover; left brings higher numbers into play.
Pro Tip: Trust the number and avoid getting cute. Middle of the green is always a smart play here.
Hole 7 Par 4 White: 358 yards A slight dogleg right with a narrow tee shot window. A solid drive rewards players with a simple approach into a moderately sized green. A steep back to front sloping green makes club choice imperative on the approach.
Pro Tip: Favor the left side of the fairway off the tee to avoid tree trouble and open the angle to the pin. Keep your ball below the pin at all costs.
Hole 8 Par 5 White: 490 yards A reachable par 5 for longer hitters, Hole 8, a sharp dog leg left, offers a risk-reward opportunity. The fairway slopes from left to right and the green is well-protected.
Pro Tip: If laying up, favor the left side to leave the best angle in. Go for the green in two only if you’re confident with your long iron or hybrid.
Hole 9 Par 4 White: 361 yards A strong closing hole for the front nine. Slightly downhill, with a tight approach guarded by bunkers. The green has subtle breaks and a false front.
Pro Tip: Choose placement over power. Avoid out of bounds right at all costs. Being in the fairway is key to attack this green.
Hole 10 Par 4 White: 382 yards A challenging par-4 to start the back nine. The hole bends to the left with thick trees scattering the left rough. Slightly uphill with a blind landing zone and elevated green. A rare front to back sloping green penalizes approaches left short
Pro Tip: Commit to your line off the tee. Take an extra club on your approach to ensure you reach the putting surface.
Hole 11 Par 3 White: 157 yards Hole 11 demands a well struck mid-to-long iron to reach the green over a large pond. The green is large but challenging. Tee shots leaked to the right will have to contend with a large greenside bunker. To the left, a smaller pot bunker.
Pro Tip: Take enough club and trust your swing. A par here gains strokes on the field.
Hole 12 Par 4 White: 321 yards A shorter, straight par 4 that entices aggressive play. Heavy trees line the right rough, with a large heather area punishing long tee shots to the left. The smaller green is perched and heavily bunkered.
Pro Tip: Lay back with a hybrid or long iron to set up a controlled approach.
Hole 13 Par 4 White: 352 yards A fairway that slopes right to left and a green that’s deceptively tricky. Avoid the left rough to set up your best chance at par or birdie.
Pro Tip: Aim right center off the tee and take enough club for a high soft landing.
Hole 14 Par 5 White: 543 yards A scoreable par 5 for big hitters. The hole favors right to left ball shaping. Nearing the green, the approach narrows with heather looming right.
Pro Tip: Aim for the right side of the fairway off the tee to avoid OB left. Favor the left on your second shot, whether laying up or going for it. The green is deep with a ridge in the center. Don't go long left.
Hole 15 Par 3 White: 159 yards Our signature hole! A picturesque, downhill par 3 with a shallow green and bunkers front left and right. Distance control is vital.
Pro Tip: Use the center of the green as your target regardless of pin position.
Hole 16 Par 5 White: 515 yards One of the most scenic and challenging holes on the course. Reachable in two for longer hitters when the wind cooperates. Heather and OB frame a multi-tiered fairway.
Pro Tip: Positioning off the tee is key. Be strategic and stay below the hole for a makeable birdie putt.
Hole 17 Par 4 White: 354 yards A tight driving hole requiring control. The green is narrow and sits at an angle. Putts tend to move to the right side of the green, toward Lake Erie.
Pro Tip: Club way up on the approach shot. Getting the ball on the green is essential, as short approaches tend to come back.
Hole 18 Par 4 White: 398 yards The dramatic finishing hole has an elevated tee box, fairway sloping right to left and a well-contoured green. Ideal for settling matches.
Pro Tip: Play smart off the tee and aim for the heart of the green on your approach. Take a breath and enjoy the walk in.
